The wonderful White Desert is the most popular and one of the most interesting areas in the Western Desert. It became a protected area in 2002 and covers an area of about 3000 km.
On the road between Farafra Oasis and Baharya Oasis, you can see unusual rock formations. Some look like animals or mushrooms, and some rocks have totally unique shapes, carved over several ages by the action of the winds. The area is a true open-air art gallery.
Some of the most famous rock formations are:
Formation of the Swallow
Formation of the Sphinx
Formation of the Indian Villages
If “Nature is the art of God”, the White Desert is clear evidence of this ability of God to form his universe. Perhaps that is why the “finger of god” is located in the white desert.
The Finger of God or “Al Qubar”, the Chisel, is a 20 meter high rock formation that can be seen from afar, even from the paved road and locals like to call it the Finger of God as it looks like a huge finger. rising from the sand.
No one would ever believe that this white desert was covered with a sea in ancient times and that the white chalk that formed all these rocks was deposited in that sea. If one takes a closer look at the rocks of the white desert, he may notice that there are shells in the rock corridors.
To the northeast of the White Desert is an area called Aqabat, or “obstacles”. Of course, that name had a reason and this area is full of obstacles that affect anyone who wants to pass.
In the middle of this area is the Twin Peaks mountain, which is an important landmark for travelers. In the western part of the white desert, which is much less visited than the eastern part because of the poor condition of the roads leading to it, there is the ancient site of Wadi Al Ubayid, or the white valley.
The Crystal Mountain
In the transition between White Desert and Black Desert, is the famous Crystal Mountain.
The rocks of this mountain are not pure crystals, but Barite – a substance that is less hard than crystals.
Crystal Mountain has an interesting history. The Egyptian government advanced by breaking up parts of this mountain to build the road between the Bahareya oasis and the Farafra oasis. This made the crystal rocks appear and turned this area into a very unique and famous place, a mandatory stop for those who venture to travel through the Desert, in the area between White Desert and Black Desert.
the black desert
The Black Desert consists mainly of mountains, interspersed with valleys and formations that look more like lunar craters formed mainly by numerous small rocks and black volcanic rocks.
These rocks meet on an orange-brown background forming a beautiful and unusual contrast, suggestive of something like a science fiction moonscape. Beautiful to see and experience.
The Night in the Desert
Particularly, in the White Desert there are some campsites and even hotels in the more developed Oases.
When we talk about the desert, it is impossible not to mention the sky unimaginably full of infinite stars in a splendorly clear and limpid way, a special setting for nights in camps or for the background of Bedouin dances watered with aromatic teas, in the open, in the light. the bonfire and the joy, rhythm and dance of the Bedouin people.
